Things to Know: Chaper 2 Flashcards
Basic building block of matter composed of electrons, neutrons and protons.
Atom
The number of protons and neutrons in an atoms nucleus.
Atomic Mass Number
Number of protons an atom contains in its nucleus.
Atomic Number
Force of attraction that holds an atoms nucleus together and the electrons in orbit.
Binding Energy
A substance that cannot be broken down into simpler parts by ordinary means.
Element
Subatomic particle with 1 unit of negative electrical charge and mass of 9.109 x 10^-31 kg
Electron
A defined energy level around the nucleus where electrons are held in orbit.
Electron Shell
Subatomic particle with no electrical charge (neutral) and mass of 1.675 x 10-27 kg
Neutron
Central core of the atom made up of protons and neutrons.
Nucleus
Subatomic particle with 1 unit positive electrical charge and a mass of 1.673 x10^-27 kg
