Thing to know about Respiratory System Flashcards
What is asthma?
strong muscle contractions that narrow the airways, inflammation, mucosal edema and excessive mucus aggravate bronchoconstriction, genetic and environmental factors
What are Corticosteroids?
hormones produced by the gonadal organs or adrenal glands, secretion is controlled by the hypothalamus, they are extremely important for homeostasis
What do Glucosteroids (corticosteroids) do?
regulate metabolic, inflammatory, and immune process
What do mineralocorticoids do?
play a vital role in the maintenance of fluid and electrolyte balance through their influence on salt and water metabolism
What are the adrenal sex hormones?
male (androgens) and female (estrogens and progesterone)
What are the advantages of combination regimens?
smaller doses or each agent are used, it decreases adverse effects
Examples of upper respiratory infections?
the common cold, rhinosinusitis
What is the goal of respiratory medications?
relief of symptoms
What are medications called that treat allergic responses?
antihistamines
What are medications called that treat coughing?
antitussives
What are medications called that loosen mucus?
expectorants
What are medications called that liquify mucus?
mucolytics
What sort of things stimulates histamine releases and the allergic response
allergic rhinitis, contact dermatitis, food reactions, & drug reactions
What is the action of antihistamines?
bind to H1 receptors to block normal immune response to stimuli
What do histamines cause?
Bronchoconstriction
Cough
Edema
Increase mucus
Teary eyes
Rash
Pruritus
Flushing of skin
