Thigh/Knee - Muscles Flashcards
1
Q
Rectus Femoris
A
- Quadricep (front)
- Crosses hip and knee joint
- Originates from anterior iliac spine, AIIS (pelvis) and acetabulum (hip)
- Inserts onto patella through quadricep tendon which attaches to tibial tuberosity
- Knee extension, hip flexion
2
Q
Vastus lateralis
A
- Quadricep (largest) lateral side of thigh
- Originates from greater trochanter of femur and lateral lip of line aspera
- Inserts into the patella through quadricep tendon
- Extension of knee
3
Q
Vastus medialis
A
- Quadricep inner side of thigh
- Originates from intertrochanteric line of femur and medial lip of liner aspera
- Inserts onto patella through quadricep tendon
- Knee extension and stability
4
Q
Sartorius
A
- Front of thigh (longest muscle in the body)
- Originates from anterior superior iliac spine (ASIS)
- Inserts onto medial surface of tibia
- Flexion, Abduction, External rotation of the hip
5
Q
Adductor Group
A
- Inner side of thigh
- Includes: Adductor brevis, Adductor longus, Adductor Magnus, pectine and gracilis muscles
- Bring body parts towards midline of the body adductor
6
Q
Illiotibial tract
A
- Band of elastic tissue along outside of thigh
- Originates from tensor fasciae latae muscle and gluteus maximus
- Inserts onto lateral condyle of tibia
- Stabilises knee joint
7
Q
Biceps femoris
A
- Back of thigh
- Originates ischial tuberosity and linea aspera of femur
- Inserts at head of fibula near lateral malleolus
8
Q
Semimembranosus
A
- Back of thigh (hamstring)
- Originates from ischial tuberosity (pelvis)
- Inserts at posterior of medial condyle of tibia
- Knee flexion, Hip extension
9
Q
Semitendinosus
A
- Back of thigh (hamstring)
- Originates from ischial tuberosity (pelvis)
- Inserts into medial surface of upper tibia
- Knee flexion, Hip extension
