Thigh Flashcards
Identify the structures in this photo of the posterior thigh (page 319, C)
Sciatic nerve (19), and four others:
- Semimembranosus - Semitendinosus - Ischial tuberosity - Long head of biceps - Iliotibial tract - Gluteus maximus
What are the clinical features of a severed sciatic nerve in the upper thigh? (Prompt: what does the sciatic nerve supply distal to this point)
Motor:
- All ankle and toe movements (flex, extend, inversion, eversion) are lost
Sensory:
- Most of lower leg and foot sensation is lost, including sole of foot, dorsum of foot, lateral leg and mallelus (but not medial leg and malleolus - this is supplied by femoral nerve - saphenous branch)
(bold to pass)
Demonstrate the boundaries of the femoral triangle.
Superiorly: Inguinal ligament.
Laterally: Sartorius
Medially: Adductor longus
Floor: Iliopsoas
(3 to pass)
What are the contents of the femoral triangle?
Femoral vein
Femoral artery
Femoral nerve
Deep Inguinal Lymph nodes
What surface markings would you look for when trying to locate the femoral vein?
Artery is just below the midpoint of the inguinal ligament, between ASIS and pubic symphysis. Vein is just medial to artery.
Which veins drain into the common femoral vein?
Great saphenous
Profunda femoris
