Thermosetting and Thermoplastic (plastics) Flashcards
What are thermosetting plastics?
These plastics can only be formed once and will not soften when heated and are used when resistance to heat is important (eg kettles, chargers, plugs).
They have high melting points, brittle and good insulators.
This means they are single use and can’t be recycled.
Examples of thermosetting plastics and uses
Melamine-formaldehyde (MF)- Plastic table wear Phenol formaldehyde (PF)- Pool balls Urea- formaldehyde (UF)- plug sockets Epoxy resin (ER)- casting Polyester resin (PR)- Hard hats
What are composite materials and examples
Two or more materials bonded together to enhance their properties. - Fibreglass (Glass reinforced plastic) - Carbon fibre Pro + Stronger and lighter Con - expensive
What are thermoplastics (or thermoforming)?
Plastics that soften on heating and harden when cooled over and over again. They are recyclable (https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/guides/z74bcj6/revision/4)
Examples of thermoplastics plastics and uses
PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride)- ridged forms for piping and flexible forms for credit cards
- High impact polystyrene (HDPE)- yogurt pots
Polystyrene
Acrylic-
What is the properties of Melamine-formaldehyde (MF)?
- Chemical resistance
- Water resistance
- Scratch and stain resistance
(Kitchen tops/ table wear)
What is the properties of Epoxy resin?
- Strong
- Chemical and heat resistant
- thermal insulator
What is the properties of Urea formaldehyde
- Hard
- stiff
- great electrical insulator
What is the properties of Polyester resin?
- Strong
- High thermal resistance
- No shrinkage
What is the properties of Acrylic?
- Weather resistant
- easy to scratch
- brittle
- Usually transparent
What is the properties of Polypropylene (PP)?
- Strong
- tough
- heat and chemical resistant
(Children’s toys, Film/ game cases, chairs)
What is the properties of Polyvinyl chloride (PVC)?
- Variable flexibility
- chemical and weather resistant
What is the properties of High density polythene (HDPE)?
- Stiff
- Light weight
- chemical resistant
- Malleable when heated
What is the properties of Polystyrene (PS)?
- Inexpensive
- Easy to cut/ shape.
