Thermoregulation Flashcards
Symptom progression of hypothermia
1st: shiver, vasoconstriction, tachypnea, tachycardia, hypotensive, ALOC
2nd: everything slows, low HR, vasodilation
Symptom progression of hyperthermia
1st: sweat, vasodilation, tachycardia, tachypnea, ALOC
2nd: dehydrated, dry/hot skin, cardiovascular collapse (severe low BP), seizures
Temp of hypothermia stages
90-95 mild
82.5-90 mod
<82.5 severe
Temp of Heatstroke
104 F
What kind of water should be given for hyperthermia?
Tepid electrolyte fluid (cold water can cause shivering)
What are un-obvious causes of hypothermia?
Drugs/alcohol
TBI (damage to hypothalamus)
Sepsis
What part of the brain controls thermoregulation?
Hypothalamus
Hyperpryexia
V high fever (106.7F)
Radiation vs conduction vs convection
R: no touch (sun)
Conduction: thru direct touch
Convection: thru air or fluid (fan, pool)
When do newborns start to shiver?
After the 1st 48hrs
