Thermodynamics and Metabolism (Unit 2) - less important Flashcards
Metabolism definition?
The sum of all chemical reactions in a cell/organism
Two types of metabolism?
Catabolism and anabolism
Catabolism definition?
Complex, larger molecules are broken down or cut into smaller ones (energy is released)
Anabolism definition?
Energy is supplied to ‘add’ simple molecules to build a larger, more complex molecule
Energy definition?
The ability to do work
Two forms of energy?
Kinetic and potential
Kinetic energy definition?
Energy of motion
Potential energy definition?
Store energy an object has because of its location or chemical structure
What is thermodynamics?
Study of energy transfer
First law of thermodynamics?
Energy can’t be created/destroyed, the total energy remains constant
Can only be converted
What is involved in energy transfer?
Bonds break in reactants, and new bonds form (activation energy required)
Transition state definition?
Bonds in reaction are breaking and bonds in products are forming
What is an exothermic reaction?
Energy is released
What is an endothermic reaction?
Energy is absorbed
What is the second law of thermodynamics?
In every energy transfer, some of the useful energy in the system becomes unstable and increases the entropy of the universe
