ATP- generally (Unit 2) Flashcards
1
Q
What does ATP stand for?
A
Adenosine triphosphate
2
Q
What does ATP consist of?
A
Adenine (base), 5-C sugar (ribose), 3 phosphate groups (third is easily breakable bond)
3
Q
General reaction equation when ATP catalyzes via hydrolysis to form?
A
Adenosine diphosphate
ATP + water = ADP + Pi
4
Q
Why use ATP?
A
- Provides a manageable amount of energy
- Can couple to endergonic reactions
- Other molecules may be too varied in shape and not readily available
- Using ATP ensures all vital functions are performed
- Large macros require numerous reactions to get the energy (ATP’s energy is readily accessible)
5
Q
What is the importance of energy coupling?
A
Trasnfer for energy from one reaction to another in order to drive the second reaction
How ATP is made so quickly, broken apart and reassembled million times per second
