Thermodynamics 1 Flashcards
Thermodynamics is concerned about : -
- Energy changes involved in a chemical reaction.
- The extent to which a chemical reaction proceeds
- The feasibility of a chemical reaction.
Thermodynamics
It is a branch of science which deals with the study of different forms of energy and the quantitative relationship between them.
Define system.
It is a part of the universe in which observations are made.
Define surroundings.
The remaining universe is the surrounding, it includes everything other than the system.
Define universe.
System + surroundings
Define boundary.
The wall that separates the system from the surrounding is called the boundary. It can be real and imaginary.
Open system
exchange of both energy and matter takes place with the surroundings.
Closed system
Exchange of energy takes place but not matter.
Isolated system
Exchange of energy and matter, it does not take place with the surroundings.
State of a thermodynamic system
state of a thermodynamic system is defined, as it’s measurable microscopic properties.
