Redox reactions Flashcards
Oxidation number
It denotes the oxidation state of an element in a compound ascertained according to a set of rules formulated on the basis that electron pain in a covalent bond belongs entirely to mole electronegative element.
Elements in the free or uncombined state the atom has oxidation state, _____
0
Alkali metals in compounds have ___
+1
Alkaline earth metals in compounds have ___
+2
Stock notations
The oxidation number is expressed by putting a ramen numeral representing the oxidation number in parentheses after the symbol of the metal in the molecular formula.
Eg: -
MnO
Mn (II) O
Oxidation
An increase in the oxidation number of the element in the given substance.
Reduction
A decrease in oxidation number of the element in the given substance.
Oxidizing agent
The substance the oxidation number of whose atom decreases.
Reducing agent.
The substance the oxidation number of whose atom increases
Types of redox reactions:
- Combination reactions
- Decomposition reaction
- Displacement reaction
Combination reaction
A reaction in which two atoms are molecules combined together to form a 3rd molecule.
Decomposition reaction
Reaction in which a molecule breaks down to form 2 or more compounds at least one of which must be written in elemental state.
Displacement reaction
Reaction in which atom or ion in a compound is replaced by an atom or ion of another compound.
Metal Displacement reaction
a metal in the compound can be displaced by another metal in the uncombined state.
Non Metal Displacement reaction
a metal or nonmetal displaces another nonmetal from its compound.
