Thermo Flashcards
What is delta H?
Enthalpy or heat
How do you calculate enthalpy (delta H)?
DeltaH = DeltaE + P DeltaV
What is heat capacity?
The amount of heat required to raise the temperature by 1*C (same as calorie)
How do you calculate enthalpy (DeltaH) from specific heat?
DeltaH = m Cs DeltaT
Cs = specific heat
(Cs can also be Cp)
Do coefficients affect enthalpy (DeltaH)?
Yes
How do you determine the Delta__* of a reaction?
DeltaH, DeltaS, and DeltaG
Sum of the product’s Delta__* minus the sum of the reactants Delta__*
(Multiplied by the coefficients)
What are the three laws of thermo?
- Energy of the universe is constant
- Entropy of the universe increases in spontaneous processes
- Entropy of a pure crystal at 0K is 0
What is DeltaS?
Entropy or chaos/disorder
What kind of reactions does the universe favor?
Exothermic. Reactions that increase the entropy of the surrounding universe.
How do you determine a Delta__ given the temperature and the other two Delta__’s?
DeltaG = DeltaH - T DeltaS
(Grandma hates tight sweaters)
(At equilibrium just set DeltaG to 0)
How do you calculate non standard DeltaG from DeltaG*?
DeltaG = DeltaG*f + RTlnQ
Where Q is the concentration of the products over reactants, to the power of their coefficients.
R = gas constant (8.31)
