Nuclear Flashcards
What is strong force and electric force?
Strong force - attraction at short range, keeps nucleus together
Electric force - repulsion at long range, “shoots” particles from nucleus in radioactive materials
What is alpha particle emission?
What is it stopped by?
A helium nucleus is released by an atom. 2 protons 2 neutrons are lost.
A piece of paper
What is beta particle emission?
What is it stopped by?
An electron is created by a neutron transforming into a proton. Mass number doesn’t change, a proton is gained.
Aluminum foil
What is positron emission?
A positron is emitted when a proton transforms into a neutron. Mass number doesn’t change, a proton is lost.
What is electron capture?
An electron falls into the nucleus and reacts with a proton to form a neutron. Mass number doesn’t change, a proton is lost.
What is the equation for half-life?
T = (-1/K)ln(m end/m start) T = total time K = (.693/half-life)
