Reactions Flashcards
What are solutions that carry electric current?
Electrolytes
What happens when something dissolves?
Hydration shells form around the whole molecule.
What happens when something dissociates?
Hydration shells form around individual ions.
What are the strong acids?
HCl, HBr, HI, HClO4, H2SO4, HNO3 (NOT HF)
What are the strong bases?
Group 1 + OH-, Ca(OH)2, Sr(OH)2, Ba(OH)2
What does titration do?
It determines the concentration through acid-base neutralization by reaching the equivalence point.
What does oxidation mean?
It loses electrons
What does reduction mean?
It gains electrons?
What is the reducing agent?
The oxidized substance.
What is the oxidizing agent?
The reduced substance.
What method do you use to balance redox reactions?
mOHe
How do you balance a redox reaction in a basic solution?
The same as normal but you get rid of the H+’s by adding OH- to both sides and canceling the H2O’s.
What color is permanganate (MnO4-) in solution?
Purple
What color is nickel (Ni2+) in solution?
Light green
What color is copper (Cu2+) in solution?
Blue
