Organic Flashcards
What are cis and trans?
Cis = same side Trans = opposite sides
What is the naming system in organic chemistry called?
IUPAC
What are the prefixes for the first four alkyl groups?
Methyl-, Ethyl-, Propyl-, and Butyl-.
Meth eth prop the butt
Which groups have which bonds?
Alkanes = single bonds Alkenes = double bonds Alkynes = triple bonds
What is the LCC?
Longest carbon chain
What determines the start of the LCC?
End closest to group, unless there’s a multiple bond. Then it’s closest to that. Unless its an alkyl halide. Then it’s the side closest to the halogen. Unless its an alcohol. Then it’s the side closest to the OH-. Lol
When naming groups or halogens attached to LCC, do you name from the shortest side or alphabetical order first?
Alphabetical order.
How is an ester formed?
Reacting a carboxylic acid with an alcohol (condensation reaction)
What makes a fat/oil?
Multiple OH- groups on an alcohol. Can form huge chains.
What does saturated, monounsaturated, and polyunsaturated mean?
Saturated = derived from acid with no double bonds. Monounsaturated = one double bond Polyunsaturated = multiple double bonds
