Therapeutic Farriery Flashcards
How does changing the ground contact area benefit the horse? (3)
Trimming- increase contact surface area
Increases uniformity of the wall
More even load distribution
What effects does applying a shoe have? (3)
Increases inertia (more force has to be applied to rotate the hoof)
Increases impact allowance of the hoof
Increases pressure on the frog allowing for decrease strain on DDFT
How can we modify the breakover stance using shoeing? (3)
Set the shoe further back relative to the toe
Blunting the toe of the shoe
Rockering the toe
What is the role of heart bar shoes?
recruits the frog into weight bearing
When would we apply speciality pads to the horse shoe?
to shock absorb & protect thin soles against bruising
Why are aluminium alloy shoes better than other materials? (4)
Absorb high frequency vibrations better
Have a better grip on hard ground
Cause less fatigue
Reduce hyper flexion of the limb
When would we shoe a horse?
When the wear and tear exceeds what the hoof can bear
How long is the appropriate shoeing interval?
5 weeks
We need each shoe to fit the individual- what do we do when the individual has asymmetric hoofs?
We make an asymmetric hoof lol
How does changing the width of a shoe affect its use?
Increased width- increases surface area ground force and decreases traction
Decreased width- increases the traction
[btw traction is pulling on the body]
What is a bar shoe?
shoe that extends from one branch to another (basically a circle rather than the tradition n shape)
What is a disadvantage to using padding in shoes?
Can lead to Thrush in wet conditions
What do we mean by shoe extensions and what do they do?
Shoe that has a section that extends past the normal hoof
Helps change centre of pressure and influence motion of the DIP joint
What shoe would we recommend for a Horse with Laminitis to help redistribute pressure away from the Lamellae?
Rocking shoe to elevate foot from the ground
Setting the shoe back towards the heel to take pressure off the front or use an open toe shoe
What shoe would we recommend for a horse with Navicular Syndrome?
Any bar shoe would help decrease impact- egg shoe would be better if there is DDFT damage due to the syndrome too
Also can use pads for extra absorption
