The Equine Foot Flashcards
What is the role of the hoof capsule?
Flexible under load which helps dissipate the load
What are the 5 layers of the hoof capsule.
Sole > White zone > Stratum lamellum > stratum internum > stratum medium hoof wall
Through which hoof capsule layer are hoof nails penetrated through?
stratum medium & stratum internum
What can placing the hoof nail too close to the laminae cause?
Hoof abscesses due to infection of laminae
An untreated hoof abscess can progress to a….
Chronic foot abscess where pressure builds up due to puss accumulation causing it to burst out at the coronary band
What is Quittor?
infection of the collateral cartilage
What is a solar foreign body?
a foreign body puncture in the hoof wall which migrates to cause injury to other hoof structures
How do we manage/ treat a solar foreign body? (5)
Leave it in place if there is no risk of aggravating the injury- if removed mark the area
Broad spectrum antibiotics e.g. Penicillin
NSAIDs e.g. phenylbutazone
Ensure tetanus vaccination
Then bandage
If the foreign body penetrates bone in the hoof, it can lead to…
Septic pedal osteitis- bacterial infection of the pedal bone
What is a hoof wall avulsion and what can we expect with this pathology?
damage to the germinative layer of the coronary band causing it to tear away- expect permanently disturbed growth
Briefly describe the pathological mechanism of a Keratoma in the hoof?
Benign growth- columnar thickening of the hoof horn on the dorsal wall
Increased pressure causes resorption of underlying bone
How are Keratoma’s treated?
by resecting the hoof wall
What area does Thrush infect on the hoof?
The frog
What is canker and how does it appear as?
mixed bacterial infection in deeper tissue layers of the frog and heel
appears as a cheesy white pus with a pungent odour
Give an example of a cause of Navicular syndrome (heel pain)?
DDFT tear
Overloading
Increased bone remodelling
