Therapeutic Exercise Flashcards
what are some things to consider when initiating therapeutic exercise?
injury (magnitude, type, body segment, prior fxn, response to injury)
pts goals
SAID principle (what does the pt need?strength?power?endurance?combo?)
what is the SAID principle?
specific adaptation to imposed demands
how can we progress strengthening?
motion
force
time
the acute/early intervention is through what phase of healing?
inflammation
what are the goals of acute/early interventions?
relieve pain, swelling, spasm
protection of injured tissues
prevent deconditioning
what ther ex is a part of early/acute intervention?
no exercise/very light
modalities
ID causes of chronic/repetitive injuries
what phase of healing is the mid-phase interventions through?
proliferation healing phase w/advance of type 3 collagen development
what are the goals of mid-phase intervention?
restore ROM, flexibility, and tissue mobility
what ther ex is included in mid-phase intervention?
exercise includes primarily ROM/flexibility
manual therapy for motion gains
late mid-phase may include early resistance exercises
what healing phase is late phase intervention through?
coincides with conversion from type 3 to type 1 collagen development and increased tensile strength from late proliferation to late remodeling healing phases
what are the goals of late phase intervention?
to restore muscles strength and endurance, proprioception, balance, and agility
what ther ex is included in late phase intervention?
exercises begin in straight plane and progress to diagonal plane activities
what healing phase is functional/activity specific intervention through?
late remodeling phase
what is the goal is the functional/actitivity specific intervention phase?
to restore pt to optimal performance
what ther ex is included in the functional/activity specific intervention phase?
resistive exercises are multiplanar
balance-coordination-agility (ABCs)
plyometrics, if used, are added in this phase
functional exercises progress to performance-specific exercises
