Active listening is key.
Hearing the story is how to understand and learn about how patient makes sense of and experiences the world.
Role as nurse is to help the patient tell the story in their own words

Discovered through listening to the stories.
Listen specifically for times patient has succeeded in overcoming obstacles and for their competencies (strength based approach)
Restorying
After understanding story, generate new ways to talk about or see the story itself.
Reframing
Paraphrasing
Stating in your own words the main thoughts or feelings expressed
Helpful for clarifying and for prompting more information
Interpreting
Putting forward possible explanation for main thought/feeling/behaviour expressed by patient
Could help patient to see new alternatives and perspectives

Values affect everything we do
As a nurse, role is to create a climate that allows patients to find solutions that fit their values and beliefs
