Residential Schools
In Saskatchewan they were open from 1863- 1996
80 schools across Canada were a joint effort between churches and government to assimilate
Truth and reconciliation
Process in Canada started to acknowledge and heal from past…truth needs to truly be out before this is more than just lip service
Colonization in Canada
Three large factors in colonization in Canada:
Epidemics
Residential Schools
The Indian Act
Epidemics
Swept through indigenous peoples after first contact in 1492. It is estimated that 90-95% of indigenous population was wiped out within two generations of first contact.
Epidemics created social disorganization, destroying relationships and supports at all levels. Additionally provided a seed of doubt in traditional leaders and healers to be exploited by missionaries
