Q

pathology in primary channel theory:

LI

A
  • exterior WC –> LU channel –> LI channel = symptoms at throat (mild sore throat, itchy), nose and eyes such as swelling, nasal discharge/congestion, tearing, still may have chills
  • WC begins to transform into Heat at throat
  • there may be complication of dampness affecting head and throat
  • LU channel governs the upper burner: brings fluids to the face via the LI, which brings moisture to skin
  • LI goversn the Jin/thin fluids (Jia Yi Jing)
  • LI + LU tx upper burner
  • yang channels transport the fluids of its yin partner

**LI can take the pathogen and try to keep it from going into the LU organ. It pushes it up toward the nose (head) and attempts to dissipate the heat and wind (S: HA, red eyes, dry lips, sneexing, allergies). LI ascends Jin/fluids to expel the pathology. If LI channel cannot dissipate the pathogen, the pathology may then move to ST channel or to the LI internal Branch leading to Bowel symptoms.

Q

pathology in primary channel theory:

ST

A
  • exterior WC –> LU channel –> LI channel –> enters ST channel at ST 12, progresses to Yangming channel type pattern
  • ST is first channel to deal with pathogen internalizing and now at the level of Ying/blood
  • first channel to deal with Shen, many ST pt calms the shen

main uses of ST channel:

  • internal origin (emotions & diet)
  • long term pathogenic factors, unresolved and affecting sensory orifices

ST channel fx:

  • Descend qi
  • harmonizes Middle Burner and Intestines “rots & ripens” food
  • regulates Qi & blood (yangming –> ST 36 + LI 10 immune)
  • deals with internalization of EPF

  • internal pathology taxes & affects the SP’s fx of T & T
  • at this stage, person will have qi def S&S and possible complication of internal dampness

FX of SP

  • governs T & T
  • controls ascending of qi & rising of qi
  • controls blood
  • controls muscles & 4 limbs
  • ascends qi to support LU qi and to HT to produce blood
  • one of the 1st channel to build back body

Q

pathology in primary channel theory:

HT

A
  • def SP is unable to contain ST heat, which can harass the HT and affect the Shen
  • stagnation may also occur in the chest and affect the circulation of Blood & Qi to 4 limbs

FX of HT

  • governs blood (site of formation and circulation)
  • controls blood vessels
  • houses shen
  • controls sweat
  • opens into tongue

HT channel used for:

  • shen disturbance
  • ST heat –> damagin SP qo –> moving into Heart & affecting shen
  • acute HT / chest pains
  • KD channel - internal branch –> LU –> HT
  • HT –> SI –> BL –> KD

Q

pathology in primary channel theory:

SI

A
  • HT can tranfer pathological heat into SI organ resulting in urinary problems frequent urination and UTI
  • SI deals with external pathogens/pestulent qi/li qi/epidemics that have such intensity that they move into the interior very quickly
    • LI channel –> SI 12 Bing Feng / Grasping the Wind
  • SI can take pathogenic factor & bring it into a state of latency
    • LI –> SI 12 –> TH/GB –> latency
    • or SI 10 is a pt on the yang wei mai & yang qiao mai
      • SI 10 –> 8 extraordinary vessels, or SI 12 –> Du 14
      • pathogen begins to consume body’s resourcs, including Jing, whilte it is held latent
  • SI treats Heat disease (SI 1, SI 12) and floating yang
    • heat begins to damage yin (& yang), whihc may lead to floating yang

Q

pathology in primary channels:

BL

A
  • appropriate to use BL to release the exterior (BL 12 wind gate) when there is an underlying def, weakness in Qi, Jin/Ye, blood, Ying
    • for ex, when LU is weak, SP & ST are not heloing (ying not supporting wei sufficiently), the KD yang will help wei qi
  • use BL channel when patient contracts a chronic illness or g ets frequent colds
  • can tx wind, damp, cold, heat with underlying def

BL Fx:

  • receives clear fluids from SI & transforms the fluid into urine
  • excrete urine (KD yang provides Qi to BL for its fx)

Q

pathology in primary channel theory:

KD

A
  • one of the 1st channels in primary sequence to build back YANG
  • pathology of KD zang damages thick fluids/ye (at SI) –> not enough yin to hold yang –> leakage of qi + yin xu
  • KD cannot manage yin to hold onto yang
    • S&S: SOB, panting, dizziness, vomiting, diarrhea, dark circles around eyes, impotence, hard time managing fluids –> swelling of limbs & abd, frequent urination / incontinence, low back weakness & pain, feeling cold

KD FX:

  • foundation of all yin and yang energies of body
  • store essence & governs birth, growth, control bones
  • produce marrow, fill up brain & control bones
  • governs water
  • controls recepton of qi (inhalation) - fx of KD to graps LU qi
  • opens into ears
  • controls 2 lower orifices
  • houses will -power (Zhi) - inner sense of life purpose
  • controls gate of life
  • KD related to being comfortablew with who you truely are, feeling complete within, self-esteem (anchor shen in KD)

Q

pathology in primary channel theory:

PC

A
  • clears BLOOD HEAT
  • protects blood and deals with any pathogenic factors that go into Blood such as li qi/pestulent qi/epidemics, overwhelming emotions –> heat –> blood heat
  • trauma in life or feeling uncomfortable with life’s transitions can affect PC - deals with trauma of HT

PC FX:

  • membrane around HT
  • protects HT (from excess heat & emotions)
  • supports HT fx of governing blood & housing mind
  • points invigorate & cool blood, stimulate or calm mind
  • used in acute febrile disease to clear heat
  • influence chest/zong qi/ HT & LU

Q

pathology in primary channel theory:

SJ

A

SJ FX:

  • disseminates yuan qi
  • controls transportation & penetration of qi (through the 3 burners)
  • controls water passages & excretion of fluids

detailed fx description:

  • regulates waterways - maintains proper fluid balance and metabolism in 3 burners
    • sign of imbalance in SJ is absence of sweat with febrile disease (like SI), also issues with edema, swelling, leakage
  • maintains latency using water –> chronic inflammatory disease – damp-heat
    • sign that SJ is having difficulty maintaining latentcy when asymptomatic suddently becomes acute and symptomatic
  • disseminates yuan qi
    • allows yuan wi to separate & differentiate for different fx around body
    • mobilize yuan qi to organs (via Shu pts) & to 3 burners
    • issues with this manifests in organ’s failure to fx or change in person’s temperament/personality due to change in distribution of yuan qi to organ
  • maintains & adjust body temperature
    • issues: alternating chills & fever, menopausal hot flashes, trouble adjusting to temp changes in environment/ of seasons, chronic low grade fever, intermitten fevers
    • when person presents with chronic, low-grade fever SI more applicable than LI, ST & SI
  • deals with dampness & heat
  • deals with age related decline & rapid decline of sensory orifices and teeth

Q

pathology in primary channel theory:

GB

A

GB FX:

  • stores & excretes bile
  • controls decisiveness
  • controls sinews

FX details:

  • GB has most Buddhist commentaries related to getting out of “wheel of life / transmigration”; karma. Wood is assoicated with rebirth & renewal, creating a new destiny after fulfilling previous destiny
  • “curious organ” - GB is link bt zangfu & curious fu; link bt post and pre-natal qi.
    • use GB to treat issue with curious fu - brain, bone, marrow, uterus, vessels
    • curious organs are organs of evolution and represents the process of how we are evolving / adapting
  • brings things out of constitutional level, some say GB treats all 8 extraordinary vessels, GB cab bring pathology out of marrow/bone
  • purifies marrow - clears slate of past life / indiscretions, take out toxisn & return to empty mind
  • overcome fear - GB gives courage, enables a person and their body to adapt
  • engenders qi - GB brings blood stored into LV into circulation to create flesh
  • GB treats latent heat & damp-heat: clears damp-heat & can address loss of latency
  • clears empty heat - related to yin def of thick fluids
  • treats wind (mostly internal), often caused by blood def
  • used in issues with decline of yin & essence and yang def

Q

pathology in primary channel theory:

LV

A

LV FX:

  • stores blood
  • ensures smooth flow of qi
  • controls sinews
  • houses Ethereal soul (hun)
  • In the progression of pathology, GB has failed to adapt, to bring out pathology from constitution, there has been a depletion of essence and this leads to collaps of yin & yang/jue yin pattern (previously in progression there was a depletion of qi, fluids, blood, yin, and yang)
  • this represents most severe stage of 6 stages of disease (SHang Han LUn)
  • there is separation of yin & yang with yang floating - heat above and cold below; wasting & thirsting; vexation; loss of memory/consciousness; counterflow qi & problems with digestion due to floating yang –> stagnation
  • heat and wind above: yin stasis accumlating below with underlying qi, blood, yin & yang def
  • there may be bleeding from origices and “break from reality”
  • person may sweat profusely (leakage of qi and fluids due to qi def), have troule holding bowels, high blood pressure, tremors and shaking, lost of pain, hot in inside / cold on outside (reversal of yin & yang)
