theorist G/D Piaget Flashcards
Piaget (Cognitive) 5 stages and their respected age groups
Sensorimotor (Birth to 2 years): Sensorimotor to Preoperational (2 to 7 years): Preoperational stage (2 to 7 years): Concrete Operational (7 to 11 years): Formal Operational (11 to adulthood):
Develop cause and effect, problem solving is trial and error. They are curious and experimental. They become aware that objects have permanence – objects exist even though it is no longer visible. Children begin to use language.
Piaget (Cognitive)Sensorimotor (Birth to 2 years):
egocentrism, doesn’t mean selfishness, but inability to put themselves in place of another person. They cannot reason to see from someone else’s point of view either. Cannot reason beyond the observable, they cannot generalize
Piaget Sensorimotor to Preoperational (2 to 7 years):
egocentrism, inability to put themselves in another point of view. Concrete and cannot generalize. Requires concrete examples.
Piaget Preoperational stage (2 to 7 years):
Thought is becoming increasingly logical and coherent. Classify, sort, and order. They develop a new concept of permanence: realizing physical factors, such as volume and weight, can stay the same even if outward appearances are changed. They still prefer concrete, limited abstract. Thought can become less self-centered through interaction with others. Can consider other points of view.
Piaget Concrete Operational (7 to 11 years):
characterized by adaptability and flexibility. Think abstract, use abstract symbols and draw logical conclusions from a set of observations. For example: If a is larger than B and B is larger than C, which symptom is the largest. Can make hypothesis and test them. Can consider theoretic and philosophic matters. They may confuse ideal with the practical, most contradictions in the world can be dealt with and resolved.
Piaget Formal Operational (11 to adulthood):
Children begin to use language.
