first task is to establish trust in the people providing care (food, clean clothing, touch & comfort). If needs are not met infant will learn to mistrust others.
(Birth – 12 months)Trust vs. Mistrust;
Sense of autonomy is shown by controlling body excretions, saying “no” when asked to do something, and directing motor activities and play. Important to not criticize toddler for expressing autonomy or lack of control (i.e. toilet training) – will otherwise develop a sense of shame and doubt their abilities.
1-3Autonomy vs. shame and doubt;
young child initiates new activities and considers new ideas. Interested to explores creates a busy and involved. Constant criticism leads to feelings of guilt and lack of purpose.
(3yr-6yr)Initiative vs. guilt;
middle childhood years are characterized by development of new interests and involvement in activities. Child takes pride in accomplishments in sports, school, home. If child cannot accomplish what is expected the result will be a sense of inferiority.
(6yr-12yr)Industry vs. inferiority
as the body matures and thought processes become more complex, a new sense of identity or self is established. Children become overly preoccupied with the way they appear in the eyes of others compared with their own self-concept. The adolescent who is unable to establish a meaningful self-definition will experience confusion in one more role of life. The outcome of successful mastery is devotion and fidelity to others and to values an ideology.
