What is self-concept?
It is how you see yourself and what makes you different from others.
What is self-esteem?
It is how you feel about your own self-worth.
What is self-image/identity?
It is the way we see ourselves.
What is ideal-self?
It is our view of what we would like to be.
What is Susan Harter’s Model of Self-Esteem?
Her model suggests that our self-esteem is related to how close our self-image and ideal-self are.
The closer our self-image and ideal-self are to each other, the higher our self-esteem.
What is Cooley’s Looking Glass Theory?
It suggests self-image is developed in response to how adults and other children react to the child.
Practitioners need to develop strong and nurturing relationships with the children.
They have to ensure that settings are happy places where adults are positive about the children and their families.
What is the Mirror/Rouge Test?
It is how children develop self-image (enabling them to recognise themself).
It is when a red dot is placed on a child’s face and they are put infant of a mirror.
When they start ti recognise themself, they will touch their own face (not the mirror).
They do this between the age of
1.5-2 years.
What develops due to the reaction from others?
They develop self-image due to how others react to them.
