Bandura's Social Learning Theory Flashcards

1
Q

What did Bandura believe?

A

He believed children learn via observational learning.

He agreed with Skinner that we learn through consequences but we also learn through what happens to others.

He suggested thought processes are involved.

Q

What are the key terms of Bandura’s theory?

A

Observation= watching a behaviour.

Imitation= copying a behaviour.

Modelling= demonstrating a behaviour.

Role Models= people you look up to or want to be like.

Identification= associating with the qualities and values of an individual.

Q

What is Bandura’s bobo doll experiment 1961?

A

His theory is illustrated on this experiment.

Kids saw adults punching an inflated doll while narrating their aggressive behaviours.

These kids were then put in a toy-deprived situation and they acted out the same behaviours they had seen.

Q

What is the significance of this in an early years setting?

A

Adults should act as a positive role model for children.

We should reward good behaviour.

We should punish bad behaviour.

Q

What are the 4 main cognitive stages of social learning?

A

Bandura stated that social learning comprises of 4 main cognitive stages.

Attention= a child observes a person who is modelling a behaviour.

Retention= what has been observed is held in memory to be used when an opportunity occurs.

Reproduction= what has been learned is then imitated.

Motivation= children may want to copy a behaviour as they anticipate intrinsic or extrinsic rewards.
