What is attachment?

A

It is an emotional bond between a child and another person.

It develops in stages.

It is important for emotional security, learning and future relationships.

How can we tell a child has formed an attachment?

A

Proximity seeking.

Happy to see them.

Upset when they leave.

Secure base behaviour.

What are the key terms of Bowlby’s theory?

A

Innate= attachment is genetic/instinctive.

Monotropic Attachment= 1 special attachment (normally mother).

Critical Period= time frame when attachment is formed (0-2.5yrs).

Internal Working Period= mental template for attachment (based on the monotropic attachment).

Disruption to Attachment= consequence if attachment is broken or doesn’t form properly.

What are the long term consequences for disruption to attachment?

A

Low IQ.

Lack of empathy towards others.

Problems forming relationships with others.

What did Bowlby suggest about attachment in childhood?

A

He suggested your attachments in childhood will impact your relationships in your later childhood, adolsecence and adulthood.

It is important that early year practitioners recognise and understand children’s attachment types so they are able to support them better.
