How do transitions impact children?
It brings a new environment or new relationship to a child.
They may experience a range of feelings- impacts learning.
It needs to be managed efficiently in order for children to keep a secure/positive social and emotional development.
What are 6 examples of transitions?
Starting a childcare setting or school.
Moving between care or educational providers.
Birth of a new sibling.
Death of a significant family member.
Change in the family structure.
Moving house.
Starting or Changing Care/Education
They may be nervous but also excited.
They may suffer from separation anxiety from parents/carers.
Birth of a New Sibling
They may feel like they are going to take their place.
They may be jealous and start to regress- wanting attention from parents/carers.
They may behave aggressively towards their sibling.
Death of a Significant Family Member
They may cry, feel angry and become clingy.
They may become withdrawn, stop speaking and play alone.
This may affect their eating and sleeping habits.
Change in Family Structure
They may be jealous and resent over the new additions to the family.
They may have to move house or spend time at 2 separate houses- disrupts sleep pattern and may feel unsettled.
What impacts does moving house have on children?
This may impact their emotional development- sense of loss.
This may interrupt their routine- feel anxious.
They may become clingy to parents/carers.
They may be angry and distressed.
What is the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)?
It is a framework concerned with the learning, development and welfare of children from birth to 5 years old.
This applies to childminders, day nurseries, playgroups and holiday play-schemas.
It states that every child must be assigned to a key person.
