Theories of arousal(4) Flashcards
what are the 4 theories if arousal?
-drive theory
-inverted U theory
-catastrophe theory
-IZOF (individual zone of optimal functioning) theory
what is the drive theory?
-Describes that there is a linear relationship between arousal level and performance.
-An increase in arousal will result in an increase in performance too if the skill is learnt well
What is the formula linked to the drive theory?
Performance=habit x drive
What is the Inverted U theory?
-as arousal increases,so does performance,up to an optimal point and then over-arousal causes a decline in performance.
what is the IZOF theory?
-athletes have a zone in which they have a state of anxiety that they find comfortable and where their best performance happens
what is the catastrophe theory?
Combines relationship between arousal and anxiety.After optimal levels, performance reaches a catastrophic level.
-Cognitive anxiety=mental state
