Theories and Methods 2 Flashcards
What are the three types of Methods?
1). research methods - source
2). scientific methods - analysis
3). writing methods - style
4 types of comparative analysis
1). Similar Cases - different features
2). Different Cases - same features
3). Cluster Analysis - differences in similar features and similarities in different features
4). Holistic Analysis - Comparison of the same features (how) and different features (why) into a single case or among balanced cases
Two Main Method Groups
1) Variable
2) Classificatory
What are dependent variables?
the effects of a phenomenon
What are independent variables?
the causes of a phenomenon
5 variable methods
1) MSSD
2) MDSD
3) Concomitant Variation - identifies a causal connection between two phenomena by matching variations in one phenomenon with variations in another
4) Residue - Subduct from any phenomenon such part as is known by previous inductions to be the effect of certain antecedents, and the residue of the phenomenon is the effect of the remaining antecedents
5) MSSD and MDSD
3 classificatory approaches
1). method by classes - identifies one common feature among different phenomena
2). method by typologies - identifies several criteria into a single phenomenon
3). Mix of both
What is the polarities method?
Method by typology. Identifying the opposite criteria among a phenomena and finding the ideal type by correlation between those criteria with an axiality.
What is the Multi-Typology Method?
Method by Typology. Creating several typologies
inside a phenomenon in order to isolate common criteria shaping an ideal type.
What can the research question address?
1) issue
2) phenomenon
3) theory
4) methodology
5) public policy
6) category
