Absence of war/ a time of harmony
Justice
Making things equal, often after conflict
Justified
Right, legitimate, with good reason
Righteous anger/violence
Violence or anger caused by witnessing injustice or wrongdoing. Christianity teaches this is the only type of violence that’s justified
Just war theory
A set of conditions that a war has to meet in order for the war to be justified
Jus ad bellum
Rules about when it’s right to start or go to war
Jus in bello
Rules about how soldiers/gov etc should act during war
Jus post bellum
Rules about how + when it’s right to end a war
Weapons of mass destruction
Weapons capable of killing or harming large numbers of people at once e.g. a bomb
Nuclear deterrence
Having weapons of mass destruction only as a way of preventing others from attacking you
The sanctity of life
The belief that human life is sacred/ holy and should therefore always be protected
Nuclear disarmament
When a government reduces or completely destroys their supply of nuclear weapons
Protest
A public demonstration of disapproval or disagreement
Riot
A protest that turns violent or which purposefully uses violence to make a point
Civil disobedience
A peaceful form of protest where a person refuses to comply with a law that they feel is unjust
Boycott
A peaceful form of protest where a person refuses to take part in something they feel is unjust
Holy war
A war fought for religious reasons/ a war in which people believe they are doing what God wants
The crusades
A series of wars in the 11th century to the 13th century fought by Christians in order to gain control over the Holy Land
Terrorism
Unlawful use of violence and intimidation, especially against civilians, in order to achieve a political aim
Extremism
Holding extreme political or religious views which go against key social values such as democracy and tolerance
Radicalisation
Process by which a person comes to support terrorism + extremism
Jihad
(Islamic term) the inner personal battle to put God first in life. Sometimes this term has been misinterpreted in Islam as permission to forcibly convert others to your faith
Pacifism
The belief in non-violence: belief that violence + war are wrong
Absolute pacifism
The belief that violence is never justified
Conditional pacifism
Violence is wrong, but could be acceptable under certain circumstances
Conscientious objector
A term used to describe someone who refused to fight because of their beliefs
