8
Q

Where should you place Rain Gauge

A

Not near obstacles(trees/ buildings)
So it doesn’t stop rain or channel extra rain into the data

9
Q

How does Rain Gauge Work

A

Rainfall is collected into the funnel and the collecting jar

Jar is emptied once a day

Is measured using measuring cylinder

Q

How does Anemometer work

A

3 cups are mounted on a high ground which rotates as the wind blows. Wind speed is recorded on a dial and is displayed in km/h

16
Q

Explain Barometer

A

It consists of an aneroid cell which contains a metal capsule with vacuum
As the air pressure increases the cell contracts
As the air pressure decreases the cell expands
This moves the dial and shows pressure in millibars

18
Q

How does Wind vane work

A

The top section is loose and moves with wind while the base is fixed The arrow points to the direction where the wind is coming from

19
Q

Where is Wind vane Located

A

Top of a Building

20
Q

4 Types of Clouds

A

Cirrus
Cumulonimbus
Cumulus
Stratus

21
Q

Characteristics of Stevenson Screen

A

1) Painted White( Reflect Sunlight)
2) Legs( Ensure it is in air and not ground)
3) Slates( air flow)

22
Q

Why is weather forecasting not always accurate?

A

Due to the chaotic nature of our atmosphere, it is hard to give accurate long range forecast

23
Q

Factors Affecting Climate

A

Latitude
Altitude
Prevailing Winds
Distance from the sea

24
Q

How does latitude affect Climate

A

The sun’s rays to the equator travels a shorter distance and there is a smaller chance that is will be reflected by clouds.
However, the sun rays take a long time to reach places with a high latitude as it has to travel more distance

25
Q

Explain How Prevailing winds affect the temperature

A

The temperature and moisture characteristics of prevailing winds will be affected by where it comes from

26
Q

Where does the UK’s winds come from

A

North Atlantic drift
South West

27
Q

Explain how distance from the sea affects Climate

A

The water in the sea takes longer to heat up but takes longer to slow down.

In the winter, the water still holds the heat from summer
In the summer , the water still holds its cool from the winter

This means that the coastal areas are cooled by the sea in summer and are warmed by the sea in winter

28
Q

What are satellites

A

Small spacecrafts which carry weather instruments

29
Q

Polar Satellites

A

Rotates the whole earth in 24 hours

30
Q

Geostationary Satelites

A

Stay over the same place

31
Q

Measurement unit of Clouds

A

Oktas

32
Q

How do you observe clouds cover?

A

By looking at the sky

33
Q

Explain Land Base Station(3 key points)

A

10000 world wide
Take readings every 3 hours
Example- stevenson screen

34
Q

Explain how Rainfall Radar Works

A

Transmitter sends out harmless microwaves
receiver picks up reflected waves

35
Q

Explain Buoys

A

fixed/drifting in the sea
use digital instruments to record the weather and transmit the information into computer

36
Q

Explain Rainfall Radars

A

use electromagnetic waves to measure where rain in happening and how heavy the rain is

37
Q

What is Latitude

A

Latitude means how far north or south of the equator a place is

38
Q

What is Altitude?

A

Altitude is how high the land is above sea level

39
Q

Explain How does Altitude affect sea level

A

The temperature drop 0.6 degree Celsius for every 100 meters above sea level. This is because the sun heats the ground and ground heats the air. As you of higher, there is less ground to heat the air

40
Q

What does Polar Mean

A

Cold

41
Q

What does Tropical Mean

A

Warm

42
Q

What does Maritime mean?

A

Wet

43
Q

What does continental mean?

A

Dry

44
