What was the turning point of Henry VIII’s need for a divorce?
1527, when Catherine was past child-bearing age and Henry noticed Anne Boleyn.
How did Catherine fight against Henry’s divorce and why?
Feared for her daughter’s status if marriage was annulled.
She appealed to her cousin Charles V who had invaded Rome and now controlled the Pope so the Pope couldn’t do anything to upset them. (1527)

Who was Royal supremacy influenced by?
Boleyn, Cromwell and Cranmer
Why did Henry allow Royal Supremacy?
Because it expanded his power and he hoped for a male heir through it.
What book did Cranmer publish about papal power and when?
1530, wrote a book about how kings were not subject to papal power after Henry had bid him to research theological reasons for the divorce.
What type of view did Henry VIII have about Kingship?
an ‘Eratsian view of Kingship.’ -Swiss idea that a ruler should have control of the church.

Through the Act in Restraint of Appeals in 1533 and through the Act of Supremacy 1534
What and when was the Act in Restraint of appeals?
1533, it abolished them right of appeal to a foreign power specifically Rome.

1530, Praemunire, fined them £100,000

What were the main consequences of the break from Rome and when?
1536-1539:
- Dissolution of monasteries
- Attack on Pilgrimages and other sacraments
- Promotion of an English bible.

1536-47, it raised £1.3 million
What happened at the fall of Wolsey and when?
1529 Wolsey was charged with Praemunire and his property confiscated. This is because he couldn’t solve the ‘King’s Great Matter’. It was a significant breakdown in relationship between England and the Pope.
When did Cranmer become truly Reformist and how?
When he toured Universities in Switzerland and Germany in 1531 to research reasons for the King’s divorce this seemed to influence his theology and make his views more radical. Secretly married a German Reformer’s niece in 1532.
When was Cranmer made Archbishop?
1532, Archbishop of Canterbury.
When and how did Henry VIII have his marriage annulled?
1533, Cranmer held a convocation and they discussed the validity of Henry’s first marriage and unsurprisingly everyone agreed it was void.
How did Cromwell try to divert payments to the king instead of the Pope and did it succeed?
1532-34, through the act in restraint of annates. He was able to stop payment to the Pope but not divert it to Henry VIII.
