Theme 1 Flashcards
Interdisciplinary
Bringing together different field to make a new diverse field (stand alone)
Holism
Bringing together all parts of human life and making them a whole (cultural, biological)
Genomics
Looking at genes that are present-the whole genome, all DNA (modern and ancient)
Adaptability
Capability of an organism to increase its functionality in society
Typology
Classifying things into types (population level)
Processual
How things have changed and evolved-on a continuum
What did Helen Kurki study?
Body size and shape with climate (biocultural)
What is Kwaday Dan Ts’inchi?
Long ago person found-Skeletons found in BC and the Yukon (550 year old fossil) compared to modern society, found that 17 of 240 individuals were related maternally to this fossil.
Osteology
Bones of living and dead-can tell us age, sex, diet, age at weaning, disease, trauma, injuries, weapons used at the time. Can also compare human and non-human primates.
Anthropometry
Body size, shape, and proportion, measurement, statistical analysis of large datasets, fit of data and output to target user.
Paleoanthropology
Human evolution. Is dynamic, and not a simple linear path or progession. Based on fossilized bones, teeth, ancient and modern DNA.
Molecular Anthropology
Study of DNA of modern and ancient people. Can tell us how long 2 populations or species shared a common ancestor, migration patterns etc.
Craniometry
Measures skulls to classify people into race, temperment, criminality, intelligence etc.
Primatology
Microbiome, sensory ecology, digestion and diet, conservation, pressures on threatened species, niche diversity.
Human Evolution
Hunter gatherers (short stature), convergent evolution, adaptation to cardiac pathways (short people have higher chance of heart problems), past diets, stable isotope analysis
Convergent Evolution
2 lineages adopt the same traits independently.
Epidemiology
Tracking source and spread of infectious diseases
