What are the four subregions of the Loire Valley?
From East to West, Central Vineyards, Touraine, Anjou-Samur, and Nantais. They are not appellations. There is no regional generic appellation for Loire.
What is the name of the IGP that covers Loire?
Val de Loire. Straight forward wines displaying freshness, light body and simple fruit flavors.

What is the climate of the Loire Valley?
Cool, but the Central Vineyards have a Continental climate whereas Nantais has a maritime climate. Anjou is slightly warmer and drier and protected by the Magus hills, where certain vineyards benefit from warm, stony soils. While Touraine (further inland) has a cooler, wetter climate and clay soils.
What can be a problem due to high rainfall?
Fungal disease. The vineyards lie at the Northern edge of production for the varieties grown. Variations in weather from year to year mean vintages can differ widely.
What characteristics do the best vineyards of the Loire display?
Those that experience the most sunshine and warmth. Southern aspect, mid slope, facing the river for extra heat and reflected light.
What is the main grape varietal in the Central Vineyards and Touraine?
Sauvignon Blanc.
Name two important appellations in the Central Vineyards and their primary grape?
Sancerre an d Pouille-Fume. Sauv Blanc. They are located on very chalky, well-drained, stony soil.
Describe the wines from Sancerre and Pouille-Fume.
Dry, high in acidity, with hints of green apple and wet stone. Pouille-Fume wines tend to have subtle smokey notes.
Name two villages from Sancerre and Pulille-Fume with high reputations for Sauvignon Blanc.
Chavignol and Les Monts Damnes.
What are some wine making techniques used on Sauvignon Blanc from Loire?
Gentle pneumatic pressing and temperature controlled stainless steel vats for fresh fruity wines. Fermentation in old oak and keeping the wine on the lees for broader texture. New oak. MLF (generally in cooler vintages to lower the acidity).
What appellation produces Sauv Blanc similar to Sancerre and Pouille-Fume at a lower price?
Mentou-Salon.
Where is the majority of Sauv Blanc in the Loire grown?
Touraine. Sometimes used to make a generic white wine called Touraine that have less concentration and made in a simple fruity style.

Chenin Blanc, a high acid, non-aromatic variety.
