Why is cab franc well suited to the loire valley?
It flowers and ripens early.
Name two appellations that are known for their cab franc.
Chinon and Borugueil. Light fruity wines come from sandy soils. Fuller bodied, more tannic versions come from south-facing slopes with limestone and clay soils.
How do the cab francs from Samur and Samur-Champigny differ from those from Touraine?
Lighter in body and tannin, but display juicy berry fruit and sometimes floral notes. Best drunk young, especially Samur.
What is the second most planted black grape variety?
Gamay. Mainly in Touraine and Anjou where it makes fruity, early drinking wine.
Other than cab franc and gamy, are there other black grapes in the Loire?
A small amount of Pinot in the Central Vineyards (but the best vineyards are reserved for Sauvignon Blanc).
In order of production, what appellations produce rose?
Anjou-Samur, Touraine and Sancerre.
Where can Rose de Loire be produced?
Anjou-Samur and Toruaine (mainly Anjou-Samur).
Name two requirements of Rose de Loire.
Always dry. Must have a minimum of 30% cab franc or cab.
What is Cabernet d’Anjou?
A rose from Anjou-Samur. Medium sweet in style and made from a blend of cab franc and cab.
What is Rose d’Anjou?
Less sweet than Cabernet d’Anjou and made from Grolleau blended with cab franc and other varieties.
What is the only varietal that can be used in Sancerre rose’s?
Pinot Noir. Pale, dry and light.
How are roses in Loire made?
Direct pressing or short maceration on the skins.
