The Water Cycle Flashcards
Water Cycle
The repeated movement of water through Earth in different forms.
Evaporation
The changing of liquid water to water vapor
Condensation
Water vapor turns into liquid water. Clouds and dew form.
Precipitation
Water falls from clouds as rain, snow sleet or hail.
Sublimation
Ice changing into water vapor without first melting.
Runoff
Water moving downhill
Water vapor
Water as an invisible gas
Fog
A cloud at ground level; forms when air near the ground cools. When the droplets condense, they thicken into fog.
Cumulus
Mid-altitude, small, whit, puffy balls that look like cotton balls and bring fair weather.
Stratus
Low-altitude and looks like a gray blanket covering the sky and brings light drizzle.
Cirrus
Thin, whisky and white; high altitude; brings fair weather; looks like a feather.
Vertical cloud
Grow vertically; stretch from 1,000-12,000 meters; can be very dark in color;brings thunderstorms.
Transpiration
How plants get food.
Rain
Starts as ice crystals; turns to raindrops as the temperature goes above freezing (greater than 33 degrees or 0 degrees F; raindrops freeze as they touch any object.
Sleet
Starts as ice crystals and turns into rain; fall through cold air and freeze in the air;dozen raindrops.
