The Water Cycle Flashcards
Water Cycle
The repeated movement of water through Earth in different forms.
Evaporation
The changing of liquid water to water vapor.
Condensation
Water vapor turns into liquid water ; dew and clouds form.
Precipitation
Water falls from clouds as rain, snow, sleet and hail; all depending on the temperature.
Sublimation
Ice changing into water vapor without first melting.
Runoff
Water moving downhill.
Water Vapor
Water as an invisible gas.
Vertical cloud
Vertical clouds, also known as thunderheads, are very dark and puffy and bring (in their name) thundery weather.
Cirrus cloud
These clouds are thin, wispy and white and bring fair weather.
Cumulus cloud
Cumulus clouds are very puffy and white, and they usually bring fair weather.
Stratus
Although they are thin and white like cirrus clouds, they are not wispy, but they also bring fair weather.
Fog
Found at a very low altitude of zero meters above the ground, these clouds are gray and sometimes cause problems for people driving.
Rain
Starts as snow and turns into rain if the temperature is above 32 degrees or 0 degrees.
Hail
Strong winds blow raindrops to the top of a cloud. Continues to get bigger. It eventually gets too heavy and falls from the cloud.
Sleet
Starts as an ice crystal and changes into a rain drop. Ice cools and the raindrops freeze and they become frozen raindrops.
