Ecosystems Flashcards
Biotic
Living things in our earth! Example: birds, trees, people, plants, animals, etc…
Abiotic
Non-living things in our earth. Like rocks, signs, computer, etc…
Species
A type of animal. Example: Bears; black bears; brown bears, etc…
Habitat
All animals in the wild have a habitat. Like birds live in nests, bears live in caves, etc.
Niche
A niche is a job for a animal in the forests, deserts, oceans and many more places where animals live!
Environment
A environment is living things and non-living things of
Adaption
Animals can adapt to different stages or their life, like humans, as they grow up.
Community
Biotic factors make up a community of animals!
Ecosystem
Ecosystems are made up of biotic and abiotic factors in our earth that help us survive.
Population
A population is like a number of bears, squirrels, bunny, etc…
Biomes
Biomes are six major regions of the world with similar climate, animals, and plants. Earths six major biomes are the Tundra, the Tropical Rainforest, the Grasslands, the Taiga, the Desert, and the Deciduous Forest.
Tundra
The Tundra biome covers 1/5 of the earth. It is the coldest biome on earth and can reach temperatures of -50 degrees Fahrenheit. Animals in the tundra have adaptions to help the live in extreme cold conditions.
Tropical Rainforest
Tropical rainforests are located close to the equator. Rainforests are wet and warm all year. Average temperatures range from 70 degrees to 85 degrees Fahrenheit. One type of plant that lives in the tropical rainforest is a epiphyte. Animals that live in the rainforest have adaptions that help them live and survive in forests.
Grasslands
The weather in the grasslands varies greatly. It is cold in the winter and hot in the summer. The most important plane in the grasslands is of course, grass! Animals that live in grasslands are usually herbivores meaning that they eat plants. An example of an animal that lives in the grasslands biome in a gopher!!
Taiga
The Taiga biome is the largest land biome on earth. This region typically has long cold winters, and short mild and wet summers. The most common type of tree found in the taiga is the conifer tree. Animals have thick coats of fur to survive the cold winters. Common animals in the taiga are deere, moose, and elk. It is also known as the Coniferis Forest.
Desert
The desert biome covers about 1/5 of earth. Antarctica is the largest desert. Deserts are both hot and cold with very little rainfall. Plants that live in the desert are great at storing water like cacti.
Deciduous forest
Deciduous forests can be found in the United States, Canada, Europe, China, Japan, and Russia. Deciduous forests have four seasons . The average temperature is 50 degrees Fahrenheit. The trees in the deciduous forests lose their leaves before winter, then they grow back in spring. The animals must be able to survive the changing seasons.
Decomposer
A decomposer is a plant like a mushroom, that uses bacteria to kill a level 3 predator. Then transfers nutrients back to the plants.
Food chain
A food chain is like a cycle. It goes on and on. It has a plant, consumer (as many as 3), and (sometimes) a decomposer.
Consumer
A consumer is an animal that eats plants to get energy, then later on dies from either another consumer, or a decomposer.
Food web
A food web is a series of food chains, like a combination of them!
Omnivore
An animal that eats both plants and animals!
