The Virgin's Memo Flashcards
Structure
Inconsistent pace – stuttering sections where enjambement speeds up
Stream of consciousness style - lack of grammar
Memorandum - idea of passing thought also makes poem seem less important
Purpose
Expectation of women to be silenced
Despite being important and having a contribution, they are not appreciated
Extra
Title – Mary seems to be speaking to her son, Jesus. A memo is a reminder – it is quick, scrawled and unimportant. Suggests that the words women say are not taken as seriously in their words.
Stuff is left out of this poem (the selection process is reminiscent of Noah’s Ark and the destruction of Sodom). Furthermore, may reflect that women’s writing is left out of the canon. It could also reflect how Gospels are chosen.
Alphabetical – could reflect the secretarial role of women or the ordered way men write (as it is probably a transcript of what Mary said)
Ordinary females connected to the virgin Mary through torment, torture and lack of voice
A message from his Mother, hoping he will make the better place OR an attack on the voiceless nature of Mary in historical accounts?
Duffy is showing the possible differences that may occur should a female have created the world.
Maternal relationship be, how important is maternal guidance, Jesus became good and kind due to the love and attention from his mother.
