Loud Flashcards
Structure
Cyclical structure suggests that nothing has changed
Enjambment suggests that her voice will never die or be restrained now she has found her voice.
The listing effect throughout sounds similar to a chant - chants get louder and faster suggesting that the womans voice is getting louder & stronger.
internal rhyme towards the end – power growing
Links
Anon – in both the women are lacking power. One, she does she something about this, the other does nothing and remains passive.
History – in both there is a suffering. Both could be seen to be caused by not being given due attention. One evokes more pathos, as we can see a person wasting away (getting smaller), the other starts weak and finds their power (gets metaphorically bigger)
Tall – both grow in power (in a physical way). Both about women finding their voices
White writing – both show an alternate form of feminine expression. Loud shows how a woman finds herself above the noise whereas WW references the subversive ways women show freedom from patriarchal control. They have their own voice.
Virgin’s memo – one is showing the development of the woman’s voice, above that of patriarchy. The other seems to criticise the way in which women are reduced to their ‘feminine’ role, silenced.
