THE URINARY SYSTEM Flashcards
URINARY SYSTEM
purification plant. cleans the blood of waste material
KIDNEYS
filter blood, remove waste products and control the balance of electrolytes and fluids
ELECTROLYTES
substance that release ions into water
RENAL CAPSULE- EXTERNAL ANATOMY
outer layer. connective tissue layer that covers the kidney
RENAL HILUM- EXTERNAL ANATOMY
outer layer. indent that gives kidney its shape
RENAL CORTEX- INTERNAL ANATOMY
outermost layer where blood is filtered
RENAL MEDULLA- INTERNAL ANATOMY
middle layer. filtrate flows through the descending and ascending loop of henley
RENAL PELVIS- INTERNAL ANATOMY
inner layer. filtrate is collected and is an enlarged portion of the ureter
NEPHRON
functional unit of the kidneys and divided into two layers.
RENAL CORPUSCLE- NEPHRON
filters everything except blood cells and proteins.
RENAL TUBULE- NEPHRON
water filtration system. Tubules remove waste and collect water for the cardiovascular system
GLOMERUS- NEPHRON
capillaries that are simple squamous cells. strains everything except red blood cells and proteins
GLOMERULUS (BOWMANS) CAPSULE- NEPHRON
visceral layers of simple squamous cells called podocytes.
URETER
transports urine from the kidney to the bladder
BLADDER
small hollow organ used for storage of urine before excretion
URETHRA
urine leaves the body via the urethra
FILTRATION
where blood is passed through a filter. Only filtrate passes through
REABSORPTION
where part of the filtrate is sent back to the blood stream. chance for body to reabsorb glucose
PROXIMAL
reabsorbs glucose
DESCENDING LOOP
reabsorbs water
ASCENDING LOOP
reabsorbs sodium
DISTAL
reabsorbs sodium and water
SECRETION
part of filtrate is excreted as urine
ANTI-DIURETIC HORMONE(ADH)
vasopressin is our anti-diuretic hormone. increases permeability to water
