MASTICATION
grinding of food with teeth and tongue
DIGESTION
chemical breakdown of food into small molecules
INGESTION
when food enters the mouth
SECRETION
occurs in mouth when salivary glands release salivary amylase to help break down food
ABSORPTION
nutrients pass through lining of the digestive tract into bloodstream
DEFACATION
elimination of unusable waste products through anus
MOUTH
makes salivary amylase which breaks down monosaccharides for glucose
PHARYNX
closes trachea when swallowing to prevent food and saliva from passing the airways
OESOPHAGUS
carries food from pharynx to stomach
STOMACH
produces hydrochloric acid and pepsinogen to begin digestion
SMALL INTESTINE
where majority of absorption and digestion takes place
LARGE INTESTINE
absorbs water from faecal matter before defecation
ANUS
controls passage of faeces to outside world
LIVER
produces bile, detoxifies body, forms plasma proteins, stores nutrients and makes cholesterol
