ORGANS, TISSUES AND CELLS Flashcards
WHAT IS THE BODY SYSTEM?
Formed by organs that work together to accomplish something more complex than what a single organ can do on its own.
The body systems are interrelated and often depend on one another for proper functioning
DEFINE AN ORGAN.
The result of two or more types of tissues organised in such a way as to accomplish a task that the tissue can not do on its own
WHAT IS TISSUE?
Tissues are classified by shape and arrangement.
WHAT ARE THE 3 TISSUE SHAPES?
Squaremous(square)
Cuboidal(cubed)
Columnar(column)
WHAT ARE THE 3 ARRANGEMENTS OF TISSUE?
Simple(one layer)
Stratified(more then one layer)
Pseudostratified(looks like more then one but isn’t)
CONNECTIVE
The “Glue” that holds everything together.
e.g. bone, blood, ligaments, tendons and fat.
MUSCLE
Skeletal muscle movement is voluntary (striated) movement. E.g muslces moving, arms and legs.
SKELETAL
Skeletal muscle movement is voluntary (striated) movement. E.g muslces moving, arms and legs.
CARDIAC
Cardiac is involuntary movement. E.g heart beating.
SMOOTH
Smooth muscle is involuntary movement. E.g Internal organs and vessels.
NERVOUS
Messenger service made up of neurons and Glia.
WHAT ARE CELLS?
Cells make up all living things. Cells are the building blocks of our bodies, that is they are the structural and functional units of life.
WHAT 3 CHARACTERISTICS DO CELLS SHARE?
- They are enclosed by a cell membrane
- They are filled with a cytoplasm
- They contain deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA)
WHAT ARE PROKARYOTIC CELLS?
lack a nucleus e.g. all bacteria. Prokaryotic have no nervous system
WHAT ARE EUKARYOTIC CELLS?
contain a nucleus e.g all human cells. All eukaryotic cells have a nervous system (you are eukaryotic)
