ANATOMY, PHYSIOLOGY AND DISEASE Flashcards
ANATOMY
The study of structure.
PHYSIOLOGY
The study of function.
METABOLISM
The sum of all chemical reactions in the body.
Divided into 2x chemical reactions.
ANABOLIC
Builds up, promotes growth and cell repairs.
CATABOLIC
the breakdown. breaks down food into sugars to use as energy.
HOMEOSTASIS
the maintenance of a stable internal environment. Maintained through neural and hormonal control systems.
NEURAL REACTIONS
Instant, quick reaction.
HORMONAL
longer developing reactions. (contractions)
RECEPTOR
Sensors that responds to a stimulus that brings about a change in a controlled condition. (muscles send a message via. The nervous system to our control centre)
CONTROL CENTRE
Analyses the information sent and determines the appropriate response.
EFFECTOR
An organ that corrects the imbalance within the body.
NEGATIVE FEEDBACK
Shuts off the original stimulus, or reduces its intensity. A thermostat is set to 25 degrees, when it reaches set temp it automatically shuts off to maintain the temperature.
POSITIVE FEEDBACK
Increases the original stimulus to push the variable further. (only blood clotting and child birth)
E.G contractions during birth, increase to help bring the body back to normal state faster.
