What is emigration?
Leaving your country to permanently move to another one
Where do most arrivals seem to be coming from?
Ireland, India and Pakistan with around 500,000 of England’s pop. coming from Ireland, 430,000 coming from India and 422,000 from Pakistan
What’s significant about polish people in the UK?
In 2013, 679,000 polish people lived in the UK since they joined the EU in 2004
Why are polish immigrants making a positive impact?
- contributed 0.5% -1% to the UK’s economic growth in 2005 and 2006
- Eastern European immigrants in the UK contribute £2.54billion to the economy annually
How are polish immigrants making a negative impact?
- there have been attacks and abuse on migrant workers e.g. Northern Ireland migrant workers have had bricks thrown at them through windows of their homes
- some employment agencies have exploited polish migrant workers
What is in the primary sector?
Low paying, agricultural jobs that involve extracting raw materials from land or sea
What is the secondary sector?
Industrial, manufacturing jobs
What is the tertiary sector?
The sector of jobs that involves providing a service to others
How has the secondary industry change?
-the textile mill once employed 10,000 people and was the biggest in the world
Why have foreign industries become more competitive in the 1900s?
As coal became more affordable and the availability of coal in the uk is in decline
What happened to the workforce by 2000?
Over half the uk workforce was employed in the tertiary industry
What was the workforce like by 1900?
Over half the workers in the UK were employed in secondary industries
How has the primary sector changed?
-coal mining once employed 1 million a century ago but many closed due to cheaper coal from abroad
