Population density
Number of people living in an area measured in per km2
Conurbation
High population densities over 600 people per km
Urban
Areas which have high population densities e.g. London and Manchester
Rural
Areas which are less densely populated
Rural periphery
Means the rural area outside the main town or city

Process of people moving from 1 place to another

Reasons why people want to leave their area
Pull factors
Reasons why people want to move to an area
Population structure
Refers to the distribution, age and gender of the population
Brain drain
Source country lose skilled workers leading to a shirking economy
Primary sector
Dealing with raw material, natural resources from the ground e.g. farming
Secondary sector
Factories manufacturing raw material into product
Tertiary sector
Services e.g. teachers, doctors
Quaternary sector
Jobs that are research based and technological
Deindustrialisation
Decline of a country’s traditional manufacturing industry due to running out of raw material
Globalisation
Process in which the world is becoming increasingly interconnected as a result of trade and cultural exchange
FDI
Foreign direct investment - when a country invests money into another country by placing its business there e.g. McDonald’s in the UK
TNCs
Transational coroporations - are companies who trade in more than one country/ companies that operate across more than one country
Free trade
The free flow of goods and services without tariffs (taxes)
Global shift
Describes the movement of manufactouring
Enterprise zones
sites with reduced profit taxes, superfast broadband - most are jus toutside urban areas because land is cheaper and is still well connected
EU Grants
Funds to help the poorest regions of the EU with GDP below 75% of the EU average.
