What is conurbation?
When a city has expanded outwards and absorbed smaller settlements that used to be separate

The central part of a conurbation: high population density

The settlement areas around the edge of the urban core: lower density

Even though coal is still a very important fuel it is cheaper to import from other countries
What replaced the coal mines and why is this bad?
New service industries have grown, such as warehouses however they pay much less than what the coal miner had been earning
What is globalisation?
The process by which trade and investment build more and more connections between countries
What is foreign direct investment (FDI)?
When people in one country invest in businesses in another country to extent that they gain significant control over how those businesses run
What is transnational corporation (TNCs)?
Businesses run from one country that have control over enterprises in other countries
How has globalisation increased FDI in the UK?
Globalisation is strong in banking an finance because money can be moved electronically around the world so London is a global centre for finance
How has trade deals increased FDI in the UK?
Trade deals with developed and emerging countries make imports and exports cheaper and easier and create UK jobs
How has the EU increased FDI in the UK?
The EU encourages free trade between member states and sets up good trade deals for the whole EU with other countries
