Explain the long telegram.

Answer 1

In 1946 George Kennan, the US ambasador to Moscow. He sent a telegram discussing the US-Soviet relation. He said that Stalin wanted to destroy capitalism and advised the US government to act tough.
Effects:
-played a key role in US policy towards the USSR
-they adopted a policy of containment to stop communism spreading.

Explain the Novikov Telegram.

Answer 2

In 1964, Nikolai Novikov, a soviet diplomat in washington said that the USA wanted to use their military might to dominate the world. Since FDR’s death the USA no longer wanted to co-operate with the USSR.
Effects:
-major impact in Moscow and made them want to get as much protection in Eastern Europe as possible
