When did the Tehran, Yalta and Potsdam conferences happen?
Tehran: 1943
Yalta: Feb 1945
Potsdam: July 1945
List the main agreements and disagreements made at the Tehran conference and why it happened:
The Grand alliance met up in Terhan in Iran in 1943 to discuss what would happen to europe after WWII
Agreements:
- USA and Britain would open un a second front by launching an attack against Germany in western Europe (D-day).
- Stalin would declare war on Japan once Germany was defeated
- Poland given land from Germany
- Creation of the United Nations
Disagreements and signs of tention:
- Stalin was suspicious that the second front was delayed to weaken soviet union
- Roosevelt seemed at times to see the British empire as more of a threat than the Soviet Union.
List the main agreements and disagreements made at the Yalta conference and why it happened:
Germany was not yet defeated, so there were tensions about Poland and the type of government
the Russians wanted to set up there. In the end, it was agreed that:
1. Germany was to be reduced in size, demilitarised and pay reparations after the war.
2. Plans were drawn up as to how Germany would be divided and it was agreed that the other
countries of Europe would have the right to free elections.
3. The Nazi Party was to be banned and its leaders brought to justice.
4. Russia was invited to join the newly established United Nations.
5. The Russians promised to join the war against Japan when Germany was defeated.
6. It was agreed that Poland would have a coalition government including communists and
capitalists.
List the main agreements and disagreements made at the Potsdam conference and why it happened:
Agreements:
• Germany would be divided into four zones, administered by the Soviet Union, the USA, Britain and France, but the German economy would be run as
a whole.
• Berlin would also be divided into four zones, controlled by different countries, even though it was based well inside Soviet-controlled Germany.
