The Two Phases of Perceiving People Flashcards

1
Q

What are the two phases of perception and how are they related?

A

There are two levels.

One is immediate and automatic. Jumps to conclusions and sees immediate meaning. Heavily influenced by knowledge, emotion, past experience, stress level, attention.

The second is slower and more accurate. It’s more conscious process and takes more work. It allows us to make corrections and discounts immediate reactions.

Q

What is correspondence bias?

A

That we biased as to seeing behaviours as corresponding to the actor.

e.g. you’re late so you are inconsiderate

In reality, most of what people do says very little about them. It’s likely what a lot of people would do.

It doesn’t take the situational forces into account on someone’s behaviour

People don’t really have traits if we mean a trait is a stable and predictable tendency to behave a certain way all the time. It’s more situational.
