Jesus would almost certainly have been referring to John the Baptist who told everyone who Jesus was when he baptised him in the River Jordan
Explain Peters suggestion to build shelters for Jesus Moses and Elijah
It seems peculiar BUT the idea has its roots in the Old Testament. Before the temple was built the Israelites kept an Ark of the Covenant in a special tent called the Tabernacle. They believed that Gods presence rested within the tabernacle. So when Peter saw Jesus Moses and Elijah wrapped in Gods glory it was tents he thought that were needed
What is Sukkot? and why relevant to the Transfiguration?
It is the feast of the tabernacles and remembers this period. When The jews were protected by tents in the deserts and God guided them and protected them after the Exodus.
How do we make sense of Peters suggestion to build shelters
The Jews believed that one day God would reveal himself to the people in the tents
What was the CLOUD?
The cloud is a symbol of Gods prescence
Where else had the cloud appeared?
1) During the EXODUS there had been a cloud that had led the Israelites out of Egypt
2) There had been a cloud at Jesus’s baptism and a voice had spoken from that cloud. God had told his disciples that Jesus was his son whom he loved and they were to listen to him
Eplain the conversation on the way down the mountain
The disciples had been told that they would only properly make sense of all of this after the Ressurection
Why did Jesus tell the disciples not to speak of what they had seen until after the ressurection?
The disciples had been told that they would only properly make sense of all of this after the Ressurection
What was made clear to the disciples after the Ressurection
It was clear that Jesus had been talking about him RISING from the dead NOT about the Ressurection at end of the world. They were amazed
What does SON OF MAN mean?
This is a description that Jesus uses to describe himself. It is an old testament title and in using it Jesus is identifying with human suffering.
Jesus was the perfect example of how Gods will can be carried out by human beings in the world.
He was saying that his path was that of suffering and death not worldly glory and fame, but the disciples missed the point
